Most names, despite their "intended" purpose can be registered by anyone, but a few are regulated, meaning that you must match certain criteria for your registration to be successful.

    • - Restricted to UK schools.

Generic Domains

The official generic domain names, all are open to registration and none are regulated.
  • .com
    • - Open to any company or individual, suitable for commercial sites.
  • .org
    • - Open to any organisation or individual, usually for non profit sites.
  • .net
    • - Open to any company, organisation or individual, commonly for Internet Services Provider sites.

Canadian Domains

The official Canadian top level domain name. The registration of Canadian domain names was heavily regulated until recently even for Canadians. The requirements have now been loosened but registration is still only for Canadian individuals and organisations.

    • - Open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents or Canadian corporations, trusts, partnerships and associations (or their legal representatives).

.INFO Domains

A domain for information oriented web sites anywhere in the world.
  • .info
    • - Unrestricted, and open to any individual or business site worldwide.

.NAME Domains

Personal namespace for any individual anywhere in the world.

    • - Limited to the personal name of an individual or fictional character.

.US Domains

The top level domain name for the United States of America.
  • .us
    • - Open to business or individual with a US presence.
